Marble

What you should know before choosing marble

Marble is considered the most beautiful of stones, highly cherished since ancient Egypt. This beautiful stone seems to glow due to its transparency and the fact that it allows light to penetrate and reflect off of internal grains of crystal. The word Marble is derived from the Greek word Marmaros which means “shining stone".

The calcite crystal is the basic building block of true marbles. The calcite crystal is vulnerable to attack by mild acids, including those commonly found in kitchen and bar settings. Marble is therefore a less desirable material for kitchen counters.

Many marbles are well suited for wet area application, which extends the versatility of this material to include tub decks and showers.

The finest marbles in the United States come from the states of Georgia and Vermont, which produce large quantities.

Marble is ideal for foyers, bathrooms, floors and hearths.
